How We Tested

Over a rigorous 12-week period, we put 12 of the most popular robot vacuums through a gauntlet of real-world conditions. Each model was tested in pet-owning households with a mix of large and small dogs, cats, and even high-shedding breeds. We evaluated how effectively each vacuum removed hair from hardwood, tile, and multiple types of carpet.

To ensure consistency, we operated each unit daily, measuring performance after single and multiple clean cycles. Special focus was given to how well vacuums navigated around food bowls, pet beds, and unpredictable pet behavior. We looked at suction power, how well the brushes resisted tangling with long hair, and how easily each unit transitioned between flooring surfaces.

Battery life, charging time, and the functionality of self-emptying bins were noted. We also tracked app reliability, mapping accuracy, and voice control responsiveness for smart-enabled models. Noise levels were recorded using a decibel meter during both day and night operations.

Maintenance was another key metric: we logged any issues with filters, brush roll tangles, and bin clean-out frequency. By combining performance data with usability and reliability insights, we identified models that excel not just in labs—but in real, pet-loving homes.
